CHAPTER 14

Ashley Forester was, of course, even more perfect than Hannah had remembered.

Today, he wore leather hiking boots, navy cargo pants, a forest-green ski jacket and …

The suspicious scarf. Hannah’s eyes hovered over the silver wool wrapped around the boy’s neck. Instantly her mind bounced back to the piece of yarn on Jet’s kennel and all of the silver items in Mr Sangakkara’s wool shop. Something niggled at her. There had to be a thread linking all of this silver wool. But what?

‘Hannah? What are you doing here?’ Ash stopped abruptly, looking surprised. He glanced over his shoulder at the House of Sweets, where his mother was watching them through the shop window. Hannah waved at Mrs Forester, but the woman didn’t wave back.

‘I just popped over to say hi.’ Hannah turned back to Ash with a giddy smile. ‘I know you were busy in the shop yesterday. But, um, do you want to …’ she stared into the boy’s very large and good-looking green eyes and struggled to remember why she was there. She could practically feel Patti nudging her in the side. Oh, that’s right. The case! ‘Do you think you could show me around Shadow Mountains today?’ she said in a rush.

The boy frowned and shot another look at his mother. He seemed to be thinking it over. ‘All right, but let’s get out of the village,’ he murmured, hurrying down the street and beckoning for Hannah to follow him. ‘I’m going skiing on Mount Fortitude. You can come if you like and rent some boots and skis up there.’

Skiing? Hannah’s stomach flipped at the thought of sliding down another icy slope. This definitely was not part of her solo-investigating plan. Still, she figured it could be a good chance to ask Ash some questions about the case.

And maybe even have some fun, Hannah thought with a smile. ‘Sure!’

Together they headed down the village road and along a winding trail until they reached a bright red ski lift at the bottom of Mount Fortitude. A line of two-seater lifts chugged slowly up the mountainside, suspended from a thick steel cable. It must have been good skiing that morning, because a number of villagers were already heading up the mountain in the lifts. Ash jumped into one, Hannah joined him, and the lift pushed off. It felt a bit like being on an amusement park ride, only much colder – and quite a lot scarier.

‘Gosh, this mountain is much higher than I thought,’ squeaked Hannah, peering past her boots to the treetops below. She didn’t like heights, and the way the ski lift swayed in the wind made her feel dizzy with nerves.

Ash seemed nervous too. Despite the dropping temperature, he’d pulled off his silver scarf and shoved it in his jacket pocket. He also kept peering over his shoulder, as if checking to see if anyone was following them.

‘So, how much longer are you here on holiday?’ asked Ash, sinking lower in his seat.

‘Just another three days.’ Hannah clung to the lift’s metal crossbar.
